“Snow White at the Automat”

My poem “Snow White at the Automat” has been published in the latest issue of Cabinet des Fées, also containing work by Sonya Taaffe (go read her poem now, it is lovely) and many other interesting people. An article by Nurul Huda on the heroic journey as it applies to Shirley Lim’s Princess Shawl, a Malaysian children’s book retelling a historical-folkloric tale, looks especially fascinating and is open in my browser for later reading.

Go read!

I’m in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, visiting temples and markets, and following the news from Bangkok – twitter being the best resource, especially @RichardBarrow and @tulsathit – with concern and sadness. It’s very strange hearing about fires in places I know and like, and seeing pictures like this (from yesterday – today’s pictures are mostly of burnt-out deserted former protest sites) which belong in movies, not real life, not the city that’s creeping into my life as home-in-Asia. The latest BBC article has more information, if you don’t know what’s going on. I’m passing through the city early next week. Hopefully it will have calmed down – though, really, I’m more concerned for the people who live in the dangerous areas. Please end, violence.

  • I hope you’ll enjoy reading the article as much as I enjoyed writing it. I love folklore/myth retelling, and was excited that we finally have one about our own Malaysian history. I also love your poem, especially the lines “Tempting, Mother,/ but you know I’m not seven now.”

    • Thank you!

Your article’s going to be my bedtime reading, I think.
